1947: Snake Handling Cult
Approximately 3,000 persons gathered on Black Mountain in Kentucky near the Virginia line, Oct. 12, 1947, to watch about 50 members of the Holiness Faith Healers cult in a public demonstration of faith. The cultists handled rattlesnakes, copperheads, smeared their lips with what they called poison, and subjected themselves to the blast from a blow torch.
